The shooting happened in the 6400 block of Pamadeva Road in Heidelberg Township a just after midnight on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, PSP said.

A man was riding a lawn mower using a pipe or bat to destroy property when Northern York County Regional Police Department officers arrived for a call to a "domestic-incident," according to the PSP release and emergency dispatch.

The man attempted to flee by driving the mower into the roadway, and police turn on lights and sirens for a traffic stop— but he drove into a field, somehow disabling the mower, so he took off on foot, State Police detailed in the release.

As he approached his home, a "NYCR Officer gave verbal commands, but the suspect failed to comply with the officer. When the NYCR attempted to take the suspect into custody, he began to actively assault the officer. During the physical struggle, the suspect choked the involved officer. The NYCR Officer then drew and fired his duty weapon one time, striking the suspect in the neck," as stated in the PSP release.

Additional responding officers "rendered aid to the suspect," PSP explained. He was airlift to a local hospital, dispatchers said.

"The suspect remains in critical but stable condition," State Police said.

At the request of the York County District Attorney’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police- York Criminal Investigation Unit responded to scene to conduct the investigation and Troop J Major Case Team was activated to assist in the investigation, according to the release.

Charges are supposedly against the suspect for Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement.

"The NYCR Officer who discharged his duty weapon will be placed on administrative duty pending a review of the investigation by the York County District Attorney’s Office," PSP concluded the release.
